My love for vintage treasures is no secret, but honestly I love preparing for the hunt almost as much as I love the discovery of the pieces themselves.  A trip to a flea market or antiques fair is booked well in advance with the family - these are mums' mornings, no kids or husbands allowed. I pack the car the night before with a wagon, boxes, bubble wrap and a tape measure because the morning starts early and I like to creep out of the house without waking anyone.

Armed with my wagon and trusty woven market bag I try to be first in to see what treasures await.  Typically, I start at one end and strategically work my way through the booths, ensuring I don’t miss anyone.  If I’m familiar with the market, I may have my favourite stalls that I get over to first in order ensure I don’t miss anything fabulous but otherwise I just zigzag through collecting pieces as I go.

Tracy Hunting for Vintage Treasures

I always arrive with a loose plan of what I’m seeking but anticipate the unexpected discovery.  The search itself is an adventure, a journey through history, culture and bygone eras.  And, when I finally find that elusive item, the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment is unbeatable.

When I find pieces that call to me, even if I know the general history behind them, I always get chatty with the stall owner.  The more you learn about antiques and vintage pieces, the easier you can spot the really special treasures.  Having a nice little chat can also result in a better price if you’re comfortable bargaining!

When the wagon is full and the market bag is on the verge of exploding, I know it’s time to head home.  For me, there is nothing quite like the feeling of heading home with a car full of vintage treasures!  Continue reading below for more tips on making the most of your next vintage treasure hunt.

Happy hunting, vintage lovers! May your searches be fruitful, and your treasures be plentiful!
